公元2017年6月8日,这一刻的时空发生了轻微的晃动,一个新的宇宙诞生了。

这个宇宙的奇点是《三体》。

“《三体》所表现的主题:生命、文明和宇宙的关系,无疑也将是人们长久思考和想象的对象。我期望这部科幻小说能够成为一个起点,一个框架和平台,通过它能有更多的人,用基于科学的想象力构建起更为宏大和更加丰富的世界。”刘慈欣说。

 

宇宙,包罗时空万象,却源自一个奇点。《三体》三部曲的庞大视野、清晰观念、恢宏魄力,加之在全世界取得前所未有的成功,为我们拓展一个更宏大的内容世界提供了绝好的起点与支撑。

“BANG!”星空刹那间占据了整个空间,大刘在发布会现场启动了这个宇宙。

“这个宇宙的初始条件是《三体》这样具有划时代意义的作品,它的生长将给我们带来无尽的惊喜。”未来事务管理局创始人、局长(CEO)姬少亭说。

 

《三体》中文版销量已经达到700万册,相继获得《科幻世界》杂志社的银河奖、全球华语科幻星云奖、世界科幻协会的雨果奖。被翻译成英语、德语、西班牙语、葡萄牙语、匈牙利语、波兰语、泰语、法语、韩语等十数种语言并出版。十分罕见的是,乔治·R·R·马丁(George R.R. Martin)、马克·扎克伯格(Mark Zuckerberg)和巴拉克·奥巴马(Barack Obama)都公开赞扬过这部作品,很多中国的互联网大佬都是这部作品的粉丝。英文版曾登上《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜,德文版曾登上德国《明镜》周刊畅销书排行榜。截至目前,英文版总销量已超过30万册,这个数字是很多主流文学作品没有达到的。

北京电影学院副教授杜庆春如此评价三体,“《三体》最厉害的地方在于这是一部关于人类的故事,刘慈欣以他的个体生命困境作为一个根本的资源,去演绎了一个宏大宇宙中文明间的根本状况。”

谈及《三体》的社会意义,他表示,“这种书写让我想到《星球大战》在西方思想史和社会史的标志性作用,是对大战后激进运动的反向运作,成为标志西方主流保守时代来临的一个文化坐标。《三体》放在这样一个坐标系里,是一个看似迟到又恰逢时机的文化事件。它的起点自然也是1970年代,经过漫长的思想和心理的准备,在这个‘中国’为言说主体的声音必须成为影响全球的声音、成为参与构建人类共同未来声音的时间点面世了!而它构建出的意义体系肯定超越通俗文学的领域,也必然超越文学的领域,将成为构建全球未来的力量。”杜庆春此次接受了未来局的邀请,成为“三体宇宙”的高级顾问。

 

基于《三体》的世界观和故事,三体宇宙将衍生出庞大的内容体系,从抽象的哲学和观念,到具体的技术与社会设定体系,原著中空白的时间点、一带而过的细节所包含的可能性,等等一切,都会变成由一个个人物串联起来的故事。

A universe borne out of the “Three-Body” Trilogy.

“The themes in the “Three-Body” Trilogy: life, culture, universe, and their relationships, will continue to be the focuses of our imagination and discussion for a long time. I hope this work will be a starting point, a framework, and a platform, from which more people could use the imagination of science to build a grander and richer world.”

 

The Three-Body Problem’s grand scope, crystal-clear concept, immense drive, and unprecedented worldwide success, upon which the Three-Body Cosmos is based, has been an excellent beginning and support for such an exploration.

“This new universe’s genesis from the Three-Body Problem, an era-transcending work, will undoubtedly bring endless surprises for us.” Said Ji Shaoting, the founder and CEO of Future Affairs Administration (FAA).

 

Seven million copies of the Three-Body trilogy have been sold out in China alone, and those three books have been translated into various languages, including English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Polish, Thai, French and Korean, and published overseas. The English version was a New York Times Best Seller, with over 300,000 copies sold. The German version was a Der Spiegel Best Seller. This trilogy is praised by George R.R. Martin, Mark Zuckerberg, and Barack Obama in public occasions. Many important figures in IT industry in China are also fans of this work.

 

“The Three-Body Trilogy reminds me of the Star Wars franchise in western history, which is a cultural signpost for the progressive Reagan-Thatcher Era after WWII.” Said Du Qingchun, Associate Professor at Beijing Film Academy, and a senior consultant to the franchise. “The Three-Body Trilogy, if set in a similar milieu, would also be a cultural event. It started brewing in the 1970s and is published at a time when China is becoming an influential speaker in the global discourse. It would surely go beyond the border of literature, and help to shape our future.”

 

With the world view and storyline of Three-Body Problem, the new Three-Body Cosmos gives rise to an enormous new system filled with everything from abstract philosophy and concepts to concrete technology and social constructs. Many scenarios and details, which remain unexplored or unexplained in the novel, contain great potential and infinite possibilities, all of which could be stories linked by many characters.

 

The exploration and building of the Three-Body Cosmos will be a huge endeavor. It requires not only hard-work but also patience to create such a system. The Three-Body Cosmos will focus on mechanism, personnel and products, trying to gather the best creators in this industry, and provide them with opportunities and support to create the most competitive products.

 

As an authorized partner of Disney, FAA has been working with well-recognized brands such as Marvel and Star Wars. With our collaboration with academic institutes (e.g. the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction) and other creators around the world, we are ready to put into this project the best resources we have.

 

Today only marks the beginning. The goal of the who project is to create a derivative shared universe with a wider audience, to motivate more creators and producers of sci-fi content, and to make sci-fi the leader of popular culture again.

Q: What is the Three-Body Cosmos and what are your expectations?

A: It is a series of works based on Liu Cixin’s award-winning work the Three-Body Trilogy. We wish to start from the original text and expand the entire universe with all sorts of spin-offs, including fictions, comics, artwork, sculptures, animations, movies, TV series, etc. They will embody and reflect the relationship between philosophy and worldview, history and future, technology and society. The Three-Body Cosmos would be a platform for all sci-fi fans to express their visions of this world.

 

Q: Does Liu Cixin know about this? Does he approve of it? Does he like it? Will he be part of it?

A: He knows, he approves of it, he likes it, and he will be part of it.

 

Q: Why Three-Body Trilogy?

A: The Three-Body Trilogy expands over millions of years and discusses the life and death of the universe itself. It has its own grand worldview with the fate of various characters entangled with each other. This trilogy has already had a say in the history of sci-fi and cultural history. Meanwhile, Liu Cixin has left enough space for fellow creators to explore. Being recognized both in China and worldwide, The Three-Body Trilogy is a successful starting point for further commercial plans.

 

Q: How do you plan to do this?

A: FAA has established a Three-Body Cosmos branch, welcoming fans and potential partners to join in this project. Working on personnel, mechanism, and products, we wish to gather the best creators to offer the most intriguing and competitive products. This universe would be an organic system.

 

Q: What about credibility?

A: FAA has specific operational plans for various products. Liu Cixin and our editors will examine from different perspectives to make sure that each product has its most reasonable positioning. Star Wars has Canon and Legends. Similarly, we will categorize products according to their features, making sure that creators can make full use of their talents and that readers can find what they want.

 

Q: How long does this universe need for development? Will it come to a sudden stop?

A: It doesn’t really matter how long it needs, and we hope it won’t stop. The speed of its expansion may vary, but once started, it will always be there. No matter what we do, the original Three-Body Trilogy will always be there.

 

Q: What does it mean to Chinese sci-fi?

A: The best Chinese sci-fi work having its own franchise will attract more fans, and it will open up a bigger market with more creators and contributors. We’re not sure what significance the Three-Body Cosmos might have in history, but it will surely be part of our history.
